Countee  Cullen  was  born  in  New  York .  History  records  that  he  was  reared  by  a  Methodist  Minister  who  gave  him  the  name  Cullen ,  While  still  in  high  school  History  notes  that  his  ability  to  write  Black  History  Poems /  Poems  was  recognized  and  encouraged .  History  records  that  after  completing  High  school  Cullen  entered  the  under  graduate  division  of  New  York .

There  he  distinguished  himself  by  winning    the  Witter  Bynner  poetry  prize  for  undergraduates  in  American  colleges .  In  1925  Cullen  entered  Harvard  and  received  a  master  of  arts  degree .  In  that  same  year  at  the  age  of  21  Cullen  published  his  first  book  of  poems ,  titled  Color .  Color  won  the  Harmond  Award  for  high  achievement  in  literature  which  only  help  to  build  on  his  nationally  acclaimed  status .

Along  with  Color ,  Cullen  Published  other  collections  of  Black  History  Poems  under  the  titles  Copper  Sun  (  1927  )  The  Black  Christ  (  1927  )  ,  The  Ballad  of  the  Brown  Girl  and  other  Poems  in  (  1929  )  .  To  add  to  his  list  of  talents  Cullen  edited  an  anthology  of  poems  called  Caroling  Dusk .  Not  much  was  recorded  for  a  few  years  until  a  public  knowledge  record  made  reference  to  a  novel ,  title  One  Way  to  Heaven  (  1932  ) .

History  notes  that  During  the  Negro  ”  Renaissance ,  ”  (  Dated  )  .  Cullen  was  able  to  adapt  his  style  to  a  protest  motif .  This  was  evident  in  his  long  poems  against  the  shameful  acts  of  lynching  during  that  time  titled  ”  Black  Majesty  ”  and  Black  Christ .
